Introducing Smart Systems to First-Year Students

This week, we contributed two lectures to KTEK0059 Basics of Mechanical Engineering, introducing first-year students to some of the fundamental concepts behind smart systems.

We discussed sensors, actuators, and control systems, with a particular focus on connecting the theory to practical engineering applications. The students had the opportunity to learn the basics of controller tuning for a robotic manipulator and to work hands-on with a Quanser QUBE, tuning a PID controller and observing how the system responds in practice.

For first-year students, this kind of early exposure is particularly valuable. Concepts such as integrals and derivatives can initially seem quite abstract, but control systems provide a very concrete example of why these mathematical tools matter in engineering.

Many thanks to Gabriel Lima, Kimmo Paldanius, and Atte Laiho for organizing the lectures and helping make the sessions possible.
