Smart people in focus: Pengcheng Ni

Meet Pengcheng Ni, Doctoral Researcher at Smart Systems | University of Turku, , whose work is part of the Smart European Shipbuilding (SEUS) Project!

What is your research about?
“My research explores knowledge management in complex environments, with a particular focus on shipbuilding. I examine ways to enhance the efficiency of knowledge management in the industry and seek to define what constitutes an effective knowledge management system. Axiomatic design and systems engineering are central to my approach, as they provide a structured and logical framework for investigating knowledge management challenges.”

What does it mean to focus on knowledge?
“Knowledge is changing our lives. We are doing our best to use previous knowledge and create new knowledge. The interesting thing is that human beings are creating smarter things based on the current knowledge.”

What are your interests?
“I am driven by the research on knowledge management in knowledge-intensive organizations. Outside of work, I enjoy exploring Finland’s beautiful forests. Sauna is also an important part of my life, and I especially enjoy spending time in the sauna with friends.”

Pengcheng’s work is supervised by Prof. Jussi Kantola and is part of the Smart European Shipbuilding (SEUS) Project, which was launched in January 2023 under the EU Horizon program. By integrating human-centric activity mapping, knowledge management, and AI-driven design approaches, SEUS aims to advance shipbuilding practices. The University of Turku and CADMATIC lead the central research team, collaborating with academic and industry partners across Europe to drive innovation in the sector.
