Motivation letter
To participate the course the applicants need to write a motivation letter where they state their interest in the module, their commitment to participate in all the three obligatory courses and to pay for the related traveling and living costs of the intense period in Namibia, their background from the perspective of the course goals and contents, their personal experiences in the Global South and their familiarity in the relevant technologies (IoT, robotics, Arduino) and methods (agile development and co-design), plus any other relevant information. The motivation letter is to be e-mailed to tomi.suovuo@utu.fi by 11.12.2022 with the e-mail subject “Motivation letter to participate the Sustainability Engineering study module”. Include your full name, previous degrees and contact information.
Module structure
The module consists of four courses. Students can choose the amount of courses they want to study from following options:
- Option 1: 3 ECTS from unit 1
- Option 2: 20 ECTS from units 1-3 as a thematic module
- Option 3: 25 ECTS from units 1-4 as a minor study package
Unit 1: TKO_ 5801 Orientation for Sustainability Engineering in the Global South, 3 ECTS, in Turku
Unit 2: TKO_ 5802 Sustainability Engineering in the Global South, 15 ECTS, in Namibia
Unit 3: TKO_ 5803 Introspection for Sustainability Engineering in the Global South, 2 ECTS, in Turku
Unit 4: TKO_ 5804 Scientific Publication in Sustainability Engineering in the Global South, 5 ECTS, in Turku
TKO_ 5801 Orientation for Sustainability Engineering in the Global South, 3 ECTS
By the end of the course the student is familiar with the concept of sustainability, its application in sustainability engineering in the Global South and its concrete challenges in real-life settings in Namibia. They are prepared to participate in engineering digital solutions to the problems of Namibian stakeholders in a small, international team, to be co-designed with the stakeholders by design science and agile approaches.
TKO_5802 Sustainability Engineering in the Global South, 15 ECTS
By the end of the course the student is
- aware of the key challenges that sustainability poses for engineering
- able to integrate sustainability to their research and praxis
- able to design and craft sustainable engineering solutions together with stakeholders
This course is provided as an intensive 6-8 weeks project work period in Namibia. The project work is done in 4 person international teams with members at least from Finland, Namibia and India. The project work is done on-site with the stakeholder as the customer, with a course instructor also available on-site. The course organisers will plan and assist in safe and proper housing arrangements, but the living costs are to be paid by the students.
TKO_5803 Introspection for Sustainability Engineering in the Global South, 2 ECTS
Student learns to identify the connection between the content of TKO_5801 (Orientation for Sustainability Engineering in the Global South) and TKO_5802 (Sustainability Engineering in the Global South), and perceive the changes in their perception of reality due to taking the courses. This understanding will provide for personal expertise for directing projects of sustainability engineering for the benefit of their degree programme and personal career.
TKO_5804 Scientific publication in Sustainability Engineering in the Global South, 5 ECTS
The student gains experience in reporting and analyzing experiences and findings in accordance with contemporary scientific conventions, especially a solid research design of a study following design science or action research.
To complete the Sustainability Engineering Thematic Module as a minor subject module, the student is to author and submit for publication a paper in a scientific forum, supervised by a course teacher or otherwise agreed person of doctorate level. The possible incurred costs (i.e. for conference participation) are the responsibility of the authors of the publication.
