Investigating second language speaking and writing processes: Methodological possibilities and challenges
In this talk, I will argue that, to facilitate L2 theory-construction, researchers should dedicate more attention to exploring the neurocognitive processes underlying L2 speech and written production. To help achieve this, I will introduce and discuss various subjective (e.g., think-aloud and stimulated recall protocols) and objective (dual-task methodology, keystroke-logging, eye-tracking, and fMRI) methods that are available to examine neurocognitive processes during oral and written performance. Drawing on my own and others’ recent empirical research, I will highlight methodological advances and challenges in this area as well as emphasise the value of combining various methods to obtain a more valid understanding of the neurocognitive processes associated with L2 oral and written production. I will end the talk with outlining some methodological recommendations and directions for future research.
