KISUVI at the British Conference on Applied Linguistics
The traditional British conference on applied linguistics was held on September 5-7, 2024, at the University of Essex. The conference is held annually, and this year’s theme was applied linguistics in contemporary contexts: practices, approaches, and future directions.

Katja Mäntylä participated in the conference and gave a presentation on material related to the KISUVI research project. The presentation examined the pause behavior of 16 writers in three typologically different languages. The writers’ first language was either Finnish or Swedish, or they considered themselves bilingual (Finnish/Swedish). The languages used for writing were English, Finnish, and Swedish.
A large number of conference participants attended the presentation, despite the fact that the timing was not ideal and there were no fewer than 11 parallel sessions. The audience also asked some questions, for example about typological differences between the languages. The audience also made a good suggestion to examine pauses in comparison with each author’s typical pause behavior.
Recurring themes in the conference presentations included artificial intelligence in language learning and teaching, linguistic equality, adn the profession and professional identity of language teachers.
