17-19 March 2017 – Transcultural Memorial Forms: Contemporary Rememberance of War, Displacement and Political Rupture

Keynotes by Michael Rothberg (UCLA) and Ann Rigney (Utrecht University)

The symposium launched the cooperation of the international research network “Narrative and Memory: Ethics, Aesthetics and Politics” (2017-2019) funded by the Nordic Summer University. The three-day event explored the role of transcultural memorial forms in the articulation of memories and contemporary experiences of war, displacement and political conflict.

 

Wednesday 12 April 2017, 14-16 – Loss in Finnish/North American Life Writing

Dr. Samira Saramo (Research Fellow at John Morton Center for North American Studies, University of Turku) presented her research on Finnish immigrants in 1880-1939 North America and the ways in which death and mourning produce ethnicity in everyday practices and personal narrations.

Kasvatushistorian elämäkerta- ja muistitietotutkimuksen verkosto (KEMU) järjestää yhdessä SELMAn, muistitietotutkijoiden verkoston FOHNin, Nuorisotutkimusseuran, Suomen Historiallisen Seuran sekä Kasvatuksen ja koulutuksen historian seuran kanssa monitieteisen seminaarin, jossa pohditaan kasvatukseen liittyvien muistojen ja kokemusten tutkimuksen lähteitä, metodeita ja näkökulmia. Seminaari järjestetään historiantutkija Saara Tuomaalan muistoksi.

Thursday 7 September 2017, 14-15.30 – “I will not raise my child to kill your child.” Motherhood, collective memory and the continuum of sexual violence in the aftermath of war

The lecture focuses on the questions of collective trauma in war-rape survivors’ families and its impact to reconciliation processes in post-conflict Bosnia-Herzegovina. The initial premise is built on the current marginalized socio-political status of women survivors, now-mothers, and investigates how their testifying, or sharing their violent past through their storytelling might impact the ideas, perceptions, behavioral patterns and understanding of gender-based violence, cultural scripts of sexuality and violence among descendants and how this furthermore affects also unsuccessful reconciliation and peace-building in the region.

Tuesday 17 October, 11-16 – Hannah Arendt Workshop

The workshop will explore Hannah Arendt’s thinking particularly from the perspective of life narratives. The day will consist of a lecture by Professor Maria Tamboukou (University of East London) and other presentations by scholars working on Arendt.

During the workshop“Who are you? Narrative traces of uniqueness and plurality“, prof. Tambouku will look at entanglements between narratives and the political in Hannah Arendt’s thought. She will particularly present, explicate and discuss three important notions in her work: action in concert, uniqueness and plurality and will make connections with her take on narratives as tangible traces of the human condition. Besides, she will flesh out these concepts drawing on Arendt’s own work in engaging with ‘the lives of others’ through the connections she has made between biographical writing and historiography.

ABOUT PRESENTERS:

Maria Tamboukou (BA, MA, PhD) is Professor of Feminist Studies at the School of Social Sciences, University of East London, UK.  She has held visiting research positions in a number of institutions and is currently Affiliated Professor in Gender Studies at Linnaeus University Sweden, Adjunct Professor at the Institute for Educational Research at Griffith University, Australia and member of the Scientific Board of the ‘Hannah Arendt’ Centre for Political Studies at the University of Verona, Italy. Maria’s research activity develops in the areas of philosophies and epistemologies in the social sciences, feminist theories, narrative analytics and archival research. In her work, she has drawn particularly on the works of Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze and Hannah Arendt. She is the author of 7 monographs, 2 co-authored books, 3 co-edited volumes on research methods and more than 70 articles and book chapters. Writing histories of the present is the central focus of her work, currently configured as an assemblage of feminist genealogies. Her most recent on-going projects deal with Numbers and Narratives: a feminist genealogy of automathographies. She is also part of a COST-project New Materialism. Networking European Scholarship on ‘How matter comes to matter’.

Hanna Meretoja is Professor of Comparative Literature, Director of SELMA: Centre for the Study of Storytelling, Experientiality and Memory, and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Turku in Finland. Her research is mainly in the fields of narrative theory, narrative hermeneutics, and narrative ethics. Her publications include The Ethics of Storytelling: Narrative Hermeneutics, History, and the Possible (Oxford University Press, 2017), The Narrative Turn in Fiction and Theory (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014), Values of Literature (Brill, 2015, co-edited) and Storytelling and Ethics: Literature, Visual Arts, and the Power of Narrative (Routledge, 2017, co-edited).

Aki-Elmeri Hyvönen (MSS) will defend his doctoral thesis Illuminating Political Experience: Exercises on Hannah Arendt´s Thought on 27 October 2017 at the University of Jyväskylä. Hyvönen specializes in democracy and political theory, and his doctoral thesis analyses representations of political experiences. His publications include “Invisible Streams: Process-thinking in Arendt” (European Journal of Social Theory, 2016) and “Tentative Lessons of Experience: Arendt, Essayism, and ‘the Social’ Reconsidered”(Political Theory, 42/5, 2014). He has been a visiting fellow at the Hannah Arendt Center for Politics and Humanities at Bard College, and a visiting researcher at Tampere Peace Research Institute.

Saturday 21 October 2018, 11-21 – Transeuropa Open Festival: Cha(lle)nging the Other

Mediatutkimus harjoitusteatteri, UTU & Naruteatteri, TUAS

Join us to explore the various facets of imagining, narrating and physically manifesting ‘the Other’ in contemporary European context in order to cha(lle)nge the hateful and dividing spirit. By the use of different community art tools we invite our audience to challenge the topics of social injustice and inequality in everyday narratives and practices and encourage them to rewrite, reconstruct and finally to draw the concrete plans for transformations and changes in a form of live community dialogue. With the event we want to promote and encourage academic dialogue outside of the academic space and therefore to engage and mobilize broader audiences in important social matters of troubled Europe of today.

Iltapäiväseminaarin järjestävät yhteistyössä tutkijaverkosto KULTVA, tutkimuskeskus SELMA sekä Kulttuurin ja terveyden tutkimusyksikkö. Tiedekuntarajat ylittävä seminaari pureutuu ihmisyydelle ja ihmistieteille keskeisiin teemoihin: kokemukseen ja kertomukseen. Alustajina toimivat verkostojen tutkijat yhteiskuntatieteistä ja humanistisista tieteistä. Friday 17 November 2017, 12.00 – Historical imagination, futurity and narrative form

Workshop by dr. Kaisa Kaakinen (Comparative Literature, University of Turku): “Historical Biographies and Relational Imagination in Contemporary Literature” and dr. Natalya Bekhta (Comparative Literature, University of Helsinki): “Imagining Alternative Futures: Ghosts and Saviours in Post-Soviet Fiction”.

After their individual lectures, Kaisa Kaakinen and Natalya Bekhta will discuss current methodological challenges in the comparative analysis of literary form and cultural imaginaries. The following topics will be addressed in the discussion, in dialogue with the questions from the audience: how historical narration and memorial forms intersect in literary narratives with emerging ways to imagine the future, how we should take into account both local and global contexts of literary production and reception in the age of globalization, and how we should respond to challenges of scale and (semi-)periphery in comparative studies.

 

Monday 4 December, 16-18 – SELMA:n Ellis Island -elokuvailta

SELMA:n elokuvaillassa syvennetään syyskuista Change-tapahtumaa (Trauma, muisti, taide) katsomalla yhdessä Georges Perecin ja Robert Boberin tekemän dokumenttielokuvan ensimmäinen osa (53 min.): Récits d’Ellis Island. Histoires d’errance et d’espoir. 1. Traces (1979) (Kertomuksia Ellis Islandista. Tarinoita harhailusta ja toivosta. Ensimmäinen osa: Jälkiä.). Elokuvassa puhutaan ranskaa ja englantia. Päivi Kosonen on suomentanut Perecin elokuvaprojektia ja muistia käsittelevän esseen (Parnasso 6–7/2017) ja johdattelee katsojat sen pohjalta ajankohtaiseen ja koskettavaan dokumenttiin, jossa ellisislandilaisten perilliset tutustuvat hylättyyn maahanmuuttokeskukseen vartijaoppaan johdolla.Elokuvan jälkeen yleisöllä on mahdollisuus keskusteluun.
