Workshop highlights diversity as key to trustworthy science advice

On 29 May 2026, the workshop “Diversity in science advice for strengthened trust, public confidence and legitimacy” took place in Warsaw, bringing together researchers and science-policy experts to discuss how inclusive approaches can strengthen science advice.

The event was jointly organised by ALLEA (All European Academies) and the Young Academies Science Advice Structure (YASAS), highlighting collaboration across Europe’s academic community. It formed part of a broader effort to share practices and improve the resilience and legitimacy of science advisory systems.

Prof. Jovana Milić (University of Turku), a member of the YASAS Executive Board, moderated the workshop, guiding discussions on key challenges such as political pressures, inclusion, and participation in science advice processes.

Participants emphasised that diversity in expertise and backgrounds is essential for credible and trusted science advice, particularly as current conditions may limit who can contribute and whose knowledge is recognised.

ALLEA, which represents academies of sciences and humanities across Europe, works to provide independent science advice and strengthen the role of science in society. Meanwhile, YASAS amplifies the voice of early- and mid-career researchers, promoting inclusive participation in science-for-policy activities.

The workshop reinforced the need for inclusive, resilient science advice systems as a foundation for public trust and legitimacy in policymaking.
