Data Access for Research Use

The KASVU Steering Group encourages researchers to apply for access to the KASVU dataset for research purposes.

Permission to use the data is requested from the KASVU Steering Group using the data request form [LINK]. A 3–4 page research plan must be attached to the form. The plan should describe the background and objectives of the study, the data to be used, the measures and analytical methods, and the composition of the research team.

In the evaluation process, the scientific quality of the proposed study is considered, as well as previously completed or ongoing studies using the dataset, in order to avoid overlap between studies. The research plan, data request form, and a signed data use agreement are stored in the KASVU study’s TEAMS folder.

How to Request Access to the KASVU Research Data

  1. Familiarize yourself with the KASVU study and the measures used
  2. Contact the KASVU Study Director with your research idea (Ville Mankki, ville.a.mankki@jyu.fi) and the Data Manager (Marko Lähteenmäki, matlaht@utu.fi).
  3. Complete the data request form and prepare a 3–4 page research plan as an attachment. Submit both documents to the KASVU Study Director (Ville Mankki, ville.a.mankki@jyu.fi) and the Data Manager (Marko Lähteenmäki, matlaht@utu.fi). Revise your plan if necessary based on the feedback received.
  4. The KASVU Steering Group reviews the application at its next meeting (meetings are held approximately once a month) and decides on the granting of research permission.
  5. Sign the data use agreement that will be sent to you If required by your university, complete a separate agreement concerning the processing of personal data.
  6. The Data Manager will provide you with pseudonymized data in a secure manner.
  7. Offer members of the KASVU Steering Group the opportunity to participate in the conduct of the study and the preparation of the manuscript. Cite the KASVU dataset appropriately (see instructions below).

Use of KASVU Research Data Collected at Your Own University

KASVU research data collected at a researcher’s own university may be used for theses and other research projects without a research permit granted by the KASVU Steering Group. Permission to use data collected at one’s own university is requested from the KASVU contact person at that university.

The contact person coordinates the use of their university’s research data and reports on such use to the KASVU Steering Group. Contact details for the university-specific KASVU contact persons are available on the KASVU study homepage.

A 3–4 page research plan must be attached to the data request form. The plan should outline the background and objectives of the study, the data to be used, the measures and analytical methods, and the composition of the research team. In the evaluation, attention is paid to the scientific quality of the study as well as to previously completed or ongoing studies using the data, in order to avoid overlap between studies. The research data are provided to the researcher in pseudonymized form.
