KISUVI featured in Research Day
KISUVI participated in the annual Research Day organized by the School of Languages and Translation Studies at the University of Turku and the Utuling doctoral program with two presentations on Wednesday, May 6th, 2026.
In their presentation, Maarit Mutta and Päivi Laine examined a pedagogical experiment in which master’s-level students write argumentative texts in three different languages (Finnish, Swedish, and English) with the assistance of artificial intelligence. The results of the experiment show that the use of AI is not automatic: its utilization varied individually depending on language, language proficiency, and strategic choices.

Mari Mäkilä and Anne-Maj Åberg gave a presentation, in collaboration with Antti Suomela and Maarit Mutta, that examined language learners’ perceptions of the use of writing strategies when writing in Swedish and English. The results show that language proficiency influences the use of writing strategies. At higher proficiency levels, for example, language learners diversify their output by using synonyms, whereas at lower proficiency levels, writers tend to compensate for their limited vocabulary by using euphemisms.
