April 2022

Dear colleague,

welcome to Turku!

The Finnish Conference of Linguistics is held 12-14 May at the University of Turku. We are enthusiastically waiting for the diverse range of contributions to linguistics and coffee breaks with our colleagues!

The theme of the conference this year is Contacts, corpora and variation. Variation is also represented in the program: the topics covered in section presentations range from hate speech to evidentials in Wutun and from the history of plurals in Italian to robot-assisted language learning. Simplified language, the works of Kalle Päätalo, the essence of linguistics and more will be discussed in the workshops. The program includes a total of 11 workshops, five posters, four keynote presentations and 97 section presentations, all taking place within three days.

On Thursday, in addition to keynote and section presentations, the program includes Langnet’s meeting of doctoral candidates and supervisors. In the evening the city of Turku will hold a reception for those who have registered for the event in advance. On Friday the conference continues with workshops and section presentations as well as a keynote presentation, a poster session and a panel discussion by The Linguistic Association of Finland. To end the day, we will gather at the riverside and enjoy dinner at the restaurant Grädda. During the dinner the vocal ensemble Kärhämä, whose repertoire includes songs about Finno-ugric etymologies, will perform.

On Saturday there will still be plenty of section presentations, three workshops, a keynote presentation and the closing of the conference.

The reception held by the city of Turku has limited capacity and is now full. All those who have registered for the reception after 20 April 2022 are on a waiting list. The places will be filled in the order of registration. Those on the waiting list will be notified if/when places become available. The dinner at the restaurant Grädda is also close to being full, and we urge those interested in the dinner to register without delay. If necessary, the places for the dinner will also be filled in the order of registration.

Even if you’re not presenting at the conference yourself, do join us! Ideas and networks are born out of interaction. The Finnish Conference of Linguistics provides an opportunity to get acquainted with an extensive range of both Finnish and international linguistic research and linguists. Register for the Finnish Conference of Linguistics by 25 April: https://sites.utu.fi/ktp2022/en/

Best regards,

The Finnish Conference of Linguistics organizing committee

February 2022

Dear colleague,

welcome to Turku!

The Finnish Conference of Linguistics will be held at the University of Turku 12-14 May 2022. The theme of the conference is Contacts, corpora and variation. The theme is broad, and for example the diverse range of research topics and subjects, theoretical frameworks and methods represents the variation in linguistic research. We call for proposals related to these themes, but section presentation, workshop, and poster proposals on other areas of linguistics and translation studies are warmly welcomed as well.

The invited speakers of the conference are:

  • Antti Kamunen (University of Oulu): (Työ)elämä filminauhana: Vuorovaikutusaineistot tutkijanuran tienviittoina
  • Peter Slomanson (Tampere University): TBA
  • Camilla Wide (University of Turku): Kieli, kielen käyttö ja vaihtelu: Findlanssvenska jämfört med sverigesvenska och finska
  • Bodo Winter (University of Birmingham): Statistics in linguistics: Thoughts on recurrent issues and pedagogy

Proposals for presentations, workshops and posters will need to be submitted by 15 March 2022. The proposal may be in Finnish, Swedish, or English. Workshop proposals should include the theme and the program title of the workshop, the time required for the workshop, and the mode of working. It is also recommended to include the names of those presenting at the workshop in the proposal. Authors will be notified of acceptance by 30 March 2022. Those presenting at a workshop will be asked to submit abstracts of their presentation once the workshop proposal has been accepted: the organizing committee will send instructions to those in charge of the workshops, who will forward them to those presenting.

The deadline for registration for the conference, the reception organized by the city of Turku and the conference dinner and the participation fee for those presenting is 15 April 2022. For those not presenting at the conference, the deadline for registration and participation fee is 25 April 2022. The participation fee is 80 € (for students, doctoral researchers, pensioners, and unemployed persons the fee is 60 €).

Due to COVID-19, we are required to inform the city of Turku and the restaurant Grädda of the exact number of participants for the reception (held 12 May) and the dinner (held 13 May). Those participating in the dinner at Grädda will pay a separate dinner fee (around 45 €) as they register for the conference. Details for the dinner will be updated on the conference website later.

We are also prepared for the possibility that the conference may need to be held remotely. Notices of cancellations, requests for refunds of participation fees, and notices of changes in participants need to be made via email at ktp22turku@utu.fi by 26 April 2022.

October 2021

Dear colleague,

welcome to Turku!

The XLVIII Finnish Conference of Linguistics will be held at the University of Turku 12-14 May 2022. The theme of the conference is Contacts, corpora and variation.

The invited speakers of the conference are

Antti Kamunen (University of Oulu)
Peter Slomanson (Tampere University)

In addition to the keynote speeches the program includes workshops, section presentations and posters, a panel discussion by the Linguistic Association of Finland and Langnet’s gathering of supervisors and doctoral researchers. Please submit abstracts for workshops, section presentations and posters by 3 March 2022 via the conference website. Guidelines for the abstracts will be announced on the website: https://sites.utu.fi/ktp2022/en/
