Juha Lavapuro, Judge of the European Court of Human Rights, Docent of Constitutional Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Turku, was asked to choose the UTU Faculty of Law’s Article of the Year 2024. The winner was revealed during the Faculty’s development day, on 22nd September 2025, and it is Doctoral Researcher and University Teacher Juho Aalto with his article: BinaryTech in motion: The sexgender in the European Court of Human Rights jurisprudence published in Leiden Journal of International Law.

According to Lavapuro,”Aalto develops a specific approach, drawing on, among other things, Nordic feminist theory, which he uses when analyzing the structural assumptions behind the judicial practice of the European Court of Human Rights”. Lavapuro particularly praises Aalto’s way of combining theory and practice. The article has, among other merits, practical value, Lavapuro argues. It helps judges at the European Court of Human Rights understand how the law actually produces the person it claims to protect.
