On this page we have listed the online courses available for free through the PEBES partnership for students at UTU, BUAN and Humak. For enrollment instructions go to page “Enrollment“.
The approval of the courses as part of the student’s curriculum depends on the practices and decisions of the home university. The students are encouraged to contact in advance the responsible lecturers of the courses they wish to substitute with a course available through PEBES. Note that some courses may have a maximum number of participants or specific requirements in terms of earlier knowledge of the topic. You can find out about these, and further links for details, in the below course descriptions.
Courses offered by University of Turku
Conservation Biology, 2 ECTS
The course familiarizes students with fundamentals of conservation biology. It includes lectures on global extinction patterns, consequences of small population size, species invasions, habitat and population fragmentation and conservation planning. There are no prerequisites for participation in the course. The course includes 20h of lectures and an exam.
The next course will be held in January-February 2023. In order to ensure a successful enrollment, please fill in the form before 15 December 2022 (see page “Enrollment“> University of Turku).
Environment and Development, 2-6 ECTS
The course familiarizes students with environmental issues from the perspective of developing countries. It includes lectures on measurement of environmental sustainability, population growth, energy issues, food production, environmental pollution, participation of developing countries in international environmental cooperation. The course includes 20h of lectures and student presentations, and a book exam.
The next course will likely be held in October-November 2023.

Courses offered by Humak University of Applied Sciences
Community educators as adventure education experts, 5 ECTS
During the course, students acquire knowledge about Adventure Education as a pedagogical approach. The course familiarizes students with the basic ideas, concepts, frame of reference, and principles of Adventure Education. In adventure education, the focus is on experiential, activity- and adventure-based methods and processes, which are targeted to support and promote the growth, development, learning, wellbeing, and agency of individuals, groups, and communities. The course is part of the degree programme curriculum in Adventure and Outdoor Education, Community Educator (Bachelor of Humanities). No previous studies are required.
The next course will be held in January-May 2023. The course will also be available in June-August 2023. In order to ensure a successful enrollment, please sign up for the first course by 11th January 2023 or for the second course by 22nd May 2023. (see page ”Enrollment > Humak) Up to 20 PEBES students can enroll in each course (January-May or June-August).

Experiential learning and society, 5 ECTS
Experiential learning and society (Master’s level) -course aims to increase students’ understanding of the theoretical framework of experiential learning, experiential and adventure education, as well as their practical starting points and principles. The course focuses on current discussions and research, and the relevance, meaning and opportunities of experiential learning and adventure education. The participants of the course explore the relevance of experiential learning and adventure education in contemporary societies.
