The Faculty of Science at the University of Turku invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher/Project researcher position in the field of marine biology for a fixed-term period from September 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026, with the possibility of extension until March 31, 2028.
The position is part of the project “Mapping Baltic herring natal origins, migration routes and population structure using otolith elemental composition and genetic analyses”, funded by the Weisell Foundation. The project aims to generate new knowledge on the migration patterns, natal origins, and population structure of Baltic herring in the northern Baltic Sea. The research combines fieldwork and laboratory analyses, with a focus on otolith microchemistry using LA-ICP-MS-analysis.
Job description
We are seeking a highly motivated doctoral researcher with an interest in Baltic Sea ecology and fish biology. The researcher will be expected to advance their own research and participate to the activities of the Baltic herring research project. Key responsibilities include analysing otolith microchemistry data produced with LA-ICP-MS technique . In addition, there will be the opportunity to use DNA sequencing data to identify genetically distinct subpopulations. In addition, the selected researcher is expected to participate in field work and sample processing, e.g. collect biological samples of adult and larval herring in the field, and, when necessary, collect water samples to explore the relationship between water and otolith chemistry. The selected researcher is also expected to apply for external funding to support their PhD studies.
The project is led by Senior Researcher (PhD) Katja Mäkinen (University of Turku) in collaboration with Researcher (PhD) Yvette Heimbrand (SLU Aqua, Sweden), and involves the doctoral candidate pursuing a degree at both universities under a joint supervision (cotutelle) agreement, resulting in one doctoral thesis and two degrees, one from each university, with a notation on the certificates acknowledging the cotutelle arrangement. The position requires working in Finland and the researcher will be working mainly in Turku. This project is a collaboration between Turku University, the Swedish University of Agricultural (SLU) and the State University of New York (SUNY-ESF), so there is also the potential to spend time in Sweden and the U.S. There will also be an opportunity to present research findings at the International Otolith Symposium in Porto, Portugal in 2027.
Apply between 21 May 2025 and 27 June 2025 16:00 (Europe/Helsinki)
