Vincent Roumagnac yhdistelee uusia teknologioita, teatteria ja kuvataidetta tutkiakseen niiden vuorovaikutuksen mahdollisuuksia. Helsingissä asuva baski-ranskalainen taiteilija yhdistää taiteen, tutkimuksen ja teknoekologisen ajattelun, ja visualisoi teatterin ja draaman tulevaisuutta maailmassa, jota muuttavat nopeasti samanaikaiset ilmiöt: ilmastokriisi ja hyperteknologinen kasvu.
Talvella Turun yliopiston kasvitieteellisen puutarhan pieni kasvihuone on tyhjä. Sen ympärillä puutarha on lepotilassa. Kukkiiko se taas pian? Palaako kevät? Verhon takana kukoistaa kuitenkin aave-kukka, tekoälyn säveltämä popkappale, johon pääsee QR-koodilla. Teos esittää Bertolt Brechtin eeppisen teatterin innoittamana aavemaisen puutarhan: houkuttelevan, synteettisen ja vuodenaikoihin sitomattoman. Näillä viehättävillä e-kukilla on kuitenkin näkymätön hintansa. Niitä ylläpitävät datakeskukset kuluttavat valtavia määriä energiaa ja vettä kiihdyttäen ilmastonmuutosta, biodiversiteetin häviämistä ja inhimillisen työvoiman riistoa. Der Blumengarten kutsuu kävijät tämän jännitteen keskelle, nautinnon ja tietoisuuden välille, koneoppimisen luovan potentiaalin lupauksen ja sen viettelevän, ekotoksisen laulun vaaran välille.
Der Blumengarten on Roumagnacin toinen installaatio Turun yliopiston kasvitieteellisessä puutarhassa, jossa on aiemmin esitetty teos Reacclimatizations (Garden 2). Molemmat työt ovat osa Roumagnacin käynnissä olevaa taiteellista tutkimusprojektia Stages of Flower Power/s.

Der Blumengarten art installation

Vincent Roumagnac hybridizes new technologies, theatre, and visual arts exploring the potential of their contemporary dialogue. The Helsinki-based Basque-French artist combines art, research, and techno-ecological thinking, visualizing the future of theatre and drama in a world rapidly changed by the simultaneous phenomena of climate crisis and hypertechnological growth.
In winter, the small greenhouse of the Turku University Botanical Garden stands empty. Around it, the garden lies dormant. Will it bloom again? Will spring return? Behind a curtain, however, a ghost-flower blossoms, an AI-composed pop song, accessed through a QR code. Inspired by Bertolt Brecht’s epic theatre, the work stages a spectral garden: alluring, synthetic, and untethered from season. Yet these charming e-blossom carry an invisible cost. The data centres that sustain them consume vast amounts of energy and water, fueling climate change, biodiversity loss, and human labour exploitation. Der Blumengarten invites visitors into this tension, between pleasure and awareness, between the promise of machine learning’s creative potential and the peril of its seductive, eco-toxic chant.
Der Blumengarten is the second installation by Roumagnac at the Turku University Botanic Garden, following the earlier work – Reacclimatizations (Garden 2) – presented on the same site. Both are part of Roumagnac’s ongoing artistic research project, Stages of Flower Power/s.
