Jeon’s current postdoctoral research broadens the evaluation of anaesthesia nursing care by examining moral courage and safety climate alongside anaesthesia nursing competence in Finland and South Korea. High-quality and safe care depends not only on clinical knowledge and skills, but also on nurses’ willingness to speak up and on an organisational environment that supports safe practice. The study therefore combines three established instruments: the Nurses’ Moral Courage Scale, developed by Docent Olivia Numminen; AnestComp, developed as part of Jeon’s doctoral research; and the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire. Together, they provide a framework for examining individual and organisational factors associated with safe anaesthesia nursing care.

Why compare Finland and South Korea? Studying anaesthesia nurses in two different healthcare and cultural contexts makes it possible to explore whether similar factors support safe care in both countries. The comparison may reveal both shared patterns and important differences in how competence, moral courage and safety climate contribute to nurses’ ability to safeguard their patients.

At the same time, the research contributes to strengthening systematic collaboration between the University of Turku and Yonsei University College of Nursing in South Korea. Earlier this year, Professors Riitta Suhonen, Helena Leino-Kilpi and Minna Stolt shared their expertise with master’s and doctoral students at Yonsei University through online seminars, while Professor Sanghee Kim participated in a doctoral seminar at the University of Turku as an invited lecturer.

The academic exchange continued during the summer, when Jeon, together with three doctoral researchers from the University of Turku, participated in Yonsei University’s 120th Anniversary International Nursing Conference. Plans are also underway for doctoral students from Yonsei University to participate in the CIDI course in Turku next year. These activities are gradually expanding the collaboration from individual academic exchanges towards more systematic cooperation in research and doctoral education.

Jeon’s visit to Yonsei University was also an important step in advancing the postdoctoral research. Discussions with colleagues helped to refine the research plan and prepare for conducting the study in South Korea. With data collection in Finland and South Korea as the next step, a key question is whether moral courage, anaesthesia nursing competence and safety climate will be connected in similar ways in the two countries, or whether different healthcare and cultural contexts will reveal different patterns in how anaesthesia nurses safeguard their patients. Answering this question may contribute to a broader understanding of how the quality and safety of anaesthesia nursing care can be evaluated and strengthened across different healthcare contexts.
