Richard A. Proctor: Saturn and its system
London: Longman, Green, Longman, Roberts, & Green, 1865.

Richard Anthony Proctor (1837-1888) was an English astronomer. He published his first work Saturn and its system in 1865 at his own expense. The book was not a commercial success. He then encountered financial difficulties and became dependent on his writing incomes. In his later works, he adopted a more popular writing style.

In addition to Saturn, Proctor studied Mars in particular. He produced one of the earliest maps of Mars, published in 1867, and determined the sidereal period of Mars based on drawings from the 17th century. His final estimate of Mars’ sidereal period was very close to the current estimate. The Proctor Crater on Mars is named after him.
