Fridtjof Wedel-Jarlsberg Nansen (October 10,  1861 in Oslo – May 13, 1930 in Oslo) was a Norwegian polar hiker, explorer, diplomat and scientist. He was the first person to cross Greenland in 1888 and tried to enter the North Pole without success in 1893–1896. After his career as a polar hiker, Nansen served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, among other things. Nansen received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922.
