Blandt Nordpolens Naboer
Eivind Astrup
Aschehoug, 1895

Eivin Astrup, a Norwegian polar researcher, was born in Oslo in 1871. He was part of Robert Peary’s expedition to Greenland and they were the first explorers to perceive Greenland as an island. Upon his return from Greenland, Astrup was awarded the Order of the Order of St. Olaf at the age of only 21.

The Blandt Nordpolens naboer book is about Astrup ‘s polar expeditions and his descriptions of the local polar Inuit people. The Inuit had had little contact with Europeans before Astrup’s expeditions, and therefore the book’s descriptions of the Inuit were very important, especially for ethnographic research. However, Blandt Nordpolens naboer was the only book Astrup ever wrote. He died at the age of 24.
